“For Your Home” Series Highlights Latest Garage Door Design Trends and Technology

Ohio – Clopay partnered with a dealer in North Carolina to install a Canyon Ridge Collection garage door as part of a whole house renovation project featured on “For Your Home”, one of the longest running national home and garden television series airing on PBS.

This season, design expert and show host Vicki Payne is sharing the ups an downs of remodeling her Charlotte, North Carolina home.

Built in 1979, the house has great bones but requires a lot of TLC inside and out.  The home’s exterior is getting a major facelift with the addition of new doors, windows, shutters and architectural moldings.

Clopay Canyon Ridge – Faux Wood, Design 12, 5 Layer w/ Clear Cypress, Dark Finish, Arch 13 Glass, Lion’s Head Door Knockers, Fleur de Lis Step Plates

Payne selected a Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection faux wood carriage house door for the garage, which is the first thing guests see as they approach the house.  Pyane loves the look of wood and felt the historic charm of the carriage style door would fit perfectly with the home’s traditional style.  But she didn’t want the hassle of ongoing maintenance and staining so she opted for a composite door that looks like wood and can be stained like wood.

The door operates with the convenience of a Liftmaster Model 8550 (3/4 HP Belt Drive opener) with MyQ technology.

“For Your Home” is currently airing on PBS stations nationwide.  The “Exterior Touches” episode 2906 can also be viewed online at

Dixie Door’s Position on Residential Openers Manufactured Pre-1993

Dixie Door, Inc. and Chamberlain are committed to the highest standards of product safety.  Over the years, Chamberlain (Liftmaster) has led the industry in introducing innovative product safety features.  Chamberlain has manufactured garage door openers for 54 years with a safety record that ranks as one of the best in the industry.

In the early 1990s, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) enacted into law new rules ensuring that all garage door openers manufactured after 1992 had external entrapment protection devices, such as infrared sensors or sensing edges (photo eyes), in addition to the internal contact reverse mechanism.  Garage door openers made prior to 1993 are safe and reliable if installed, tested and maintained properly.  However, the vast majority of these older units are not equipped with infrared sensors (safety sensors, photo eyes) or other external entrapment protection devices, and thus do not meet today’s standards for garage door opener safety. To ensure the highest degree of safety and customer satisfaction, Dixie Door and Chamberlain/Liftmaster believes it is important that pre-1993 products are replaced as opposed to being repaired going forward.

In 2008, Chamberlain made the decision to stop supporting the repair of all pre-1993 garage door openers, this includes technical service support and the sale of replacement parts.  Dixie Door also followed suit with the decision for safety reasons.  We believe this decision will provide our customers with the latest in technology and more safety, security and convenience features.  Dixie Door and Chamberlain will not be responsible for warranty or liabilities incurred as a result of someone trying to repair a pre-1993 (non-infrared or safety sensing) garage door opener.

We understand that this may occasionally create issues with customers who would prefer to simply repair their existing units.  However, we believe this decision is a safety decision which is of the utmost importance and as always, safety comes first.
