A Black Garage Door Can Add Drama And Sophistication to Your Home

Prior to thermal-reflective paint, painting a steel surface such as a garage door would cause costly damages to the door. The dark color would absorb and retain the high heat, causing the door to bow out. Thankfully, Clopay has introduced a thermal-reflective paint that will keep a dark colored surface such as a black door cooler.

Clopay introduced black to its color choices about a year ago. Many Dixie Door customers have chose this color for their homes, adding a touch of glamour to their home. Recently, at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, Clopay introduced a new modern style door to add to a contemporary taste. So with the sleek black look, along with a more modern style door, your home can look like as if it’s going to a black tie affair.

Clopay also earned a 2014 Handy Innovation Award Honorable Mention for its black steel garage doors.

For questions or for a free estimate on a new garage door call Dixie Door at 615-822-3667. Whether it be a contemporary look such as the one pictured to the left or a classic style door, we can help you.

Clopay Introduces Three New Color Options

Clopay Expands Canyon Ridge Doors

Clopay is expanding their Canyon Ridge Limited Edition Doors by marketing a new design. Design 01 will provide a product with cladding only, no overlay, for a more transitional contemporary look. This design option is only available as a solid door, meaning no windows, with no additional top section options.

The doors can be made with several cladding material choices such as: Clear Cypress, Mahogany, or Pecky Cypress cladding material. Along with those choices to add to your door, the customer also has five finish color options like, walnut, dark, medium, whitewash, and primed.

Architects and Builders Choose Clopay Garage Doors for High Profile Projects

Clopay has invested in producing two new videos that show homeowners, builders and architects the beauty, reliability and value that Clopay garage doors can bring to any important home project.

The first video spotlights the 2014 New American Home, the official showcase house of the International Builders’ Show (IBS).  The stunning 6,700 square-foot home rises out of the foothills of the exclusive Sky Terrace housing development in Henderson Nevada.  The new video features interviews with the home’s architect and builder, both of whom comment extensively on their choice of an Avante door from Clopay.  Architect Jeff Berkus stated, “This Avante door is truly a work of art.”

The second video focuses on Atlanta-based builder Epic Development and their dramatic transformation of a foreclosed 1970s-era contemporary house into a highly marketable modern prairie home.  Again, the Avante provided an ideal solution.  “When those Avante doors are backlit, they’re gorgeous,” said Jim LaVallee of Epic Development.

Glamming Up the Garage: Clopay Introduces Steel Garage Doors in Black and Color Expansion in Bronze

Move over white doors, in 2014 we’ll be seeing a lot more drama and glamour in the place we park our cars as Clopay adds black to its steel garage door color wheel and more options in Bronze.

Painting a steel door a dark color like black  or bronze used to be a no-no, but new thermal reflective “cool paint” technology reduces heat absorption and retention, making hot surfaces and risk of thermal bowing a thing of the past.

Clopay’s factory-applied black paint finish will be available on the Gallery® Collection and Classic Collection doors with Intellicore® insulation technology in March. Visit /residential-garage-doors.aspx to see design options, which include matching decorative windows and hardware. In addition to the cool technology, the Black color will come standard with a thicker 24 gauge exterior steel surface.  This will result in Black doors having a different spring weight than other colors.

Black is now available in the following Clopay models:  GD2S/LU, GD1S/LU, GD2S/LP, GD1S/LP, 9200, 9201, 9202, 9203, 9130, 9131, 9132, 9133, 4300, 4301 and 4310.  Black is not available in the 1-3/8″ Residential Steel Back door (4050, 4051, 4053) as of 4/03/2014.

Bronze is now available in the following Clopay models:  GD2S/LU, GD1S/LU, GD2S/LP, GD1S/LP, 9200, 9201, 9202, 9203, 9130, 9131, 9132, 9133, 4300, 4301, 4310, 4050, 4051, and 4053.

Stop Mold (vinyl/weatherstripping) – Black stop mold will be available in 2 types only, dual flap stop mold and hollow heat resistant designs.  Traditional vinyl stop mold options are not available in black at this time.

“For Your Home” Series Highlights Latest Garage Door Design Trends and Technology

Ohio – Clopay partnered with a dealer in North Carolina to install a Canyon Ridge Collection garage door as part of a whole house renovation project featured on “For Your Home”, one of the longest running national home and garden television series airing on PBS.

This season, design expert and show host Vicki Payne is sharing the ups an downs of remodeling her Charlotte, North Carolina home.

Built in 1979, the house has great bones but requires a lot of TLC inside and out.  The home’s exterior is getting a major facelift with the addition of new doors, windows, shutters and architectural moldings.

Clopay Canyon Ridge – Faux Wood, Design 12, 5 Layer w/ Clear Cypress, Dark Finish, Arch 13 Glass, Lion’s Head Door Knockers, Fleur de Lis Step Plates

Payne selected a Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection faux wood carriage house door for the garage, which is the first thing guests see as they approach the house.  Pyane loves the look of wood and felt the historic charm of the carriage style door would fit perfectly with the home’s traditional style.  But she didn’t want the hassle of ongoing maintenance and staining so she opted for a composite door that looks like wood and can be stained like wood.

The door operates with the convenience of a Liftmaster Model 8550 (3/4 HP Belt Drive opener) with MyQ technology.

“For Your Home” is currently airing on PBS stations nationwide.  The “Exterior Touches” episode 2906 can also be viewed online at http://www.foryourhome.com/2906-exterior-touches/.

Garage Door Weatherstripping

Did you see the snow this morning?  The cold weather is definitely here.  If you’re having trouble keeping the cold weather out of your garage, consider replacing the vinyl around the outside of the door. The vinyl helps ensure rain, snow, dirt, or debris stays out of your garage.  Not only that but it helps keep the garage warm in the winter months, and then cool in the summer months.

The pricing is $1.50 per foot, is available in multiple colors, and we can get you the size you need.  If you need us to come out and install new vinyl for you, give us a call!  Or if you prefer to pick it up and install yourself, feel free to call or drop by our office.

LiftMaster “Don’t Chance It. Check It.” Safety Campaign Bulletin

Garages continue to serve as a major hub of activity in the modern household, often becoming the primary entry point into the home and a storage center for everything from soccer balls to snow blowers.  But, with one out of every 15 garage door openers lacking the latest safety features, there is a hidden threat in millions of households across America.  To avoid injuries from the largest and heaviest moving object in the home, LiftMaster – the number one manufacturer of professionally installed garage door openers in the world – is announcing its national “Don’t Chance It.  Check It.” Garage Safety Initiative.

Once considered a luxury item, automatic garage door openers are now installed in 35 million households across the country, with more than 70 percent of homeowners relying on their garage door as the main access point to the home.  As more and more garage door openers made their way into American homes over the last several decades, laws were enacted to ensure the safety of those using them.  However, prior to 1993, protection systems, such as infrared sensors or “photo-eyes” that stop a garage door before making contact with an object or person – were not mandatory.

Instead, garage door openers were equipped with force-sensing safety systems that only revers the door after it makes contact with an object.  These older molders can be safe and reliable if installed, tested and maintained properly.  But unless they’re retrofitted with photo-eyes, the vast majority of these older units still are not up to today’s standard of safety.

“Millions of garage lack the latest safety features, like photo-eyes or, may not be operating properly,” said Bob Markwart, President, LiftMaster, Americas.  “We believe it is our industry’s responsibility to do our best to ensure everyone is educated on what makes a garage truly safe.  LiftMaster’s “Don’t Chance It.  Check It.” initiative helps families ensure everything is in working order with the largest moving object in the home by providing three easy-to-follow safety tests that use everyday household items and only two minutes of time.”

The program, currently rolling out to a national audience, is designed to help homeowers and families understand how to check their door and make sure they have the safest garage door opener system in place.  Follow these three easy steps to ensure safe functionality of any automatic garage door openers installed after 1993 or retrofitted with safety eyes”
1.  Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo-eyes (black sensors), mounted no higher than six inches off the floor.
2.  Block the photo-eye with an object over six inches tall and press the close button on the garage door opener.  The door should not close.
3.  Lay an object that is at least 1.5 inches in height flat on the ground in the door’s path and press the close button.  Household objects this size might be a bar of soap, a stack of index cards, or a hardcover book.  The door should reverse off this object.  If it makes contact and does not revers, the door is not operating correctly.

After recording the results, homeowners are encouraged to contact a LiftMaster Certified Safety Check Dealer to seek guidance on how to keep this high-traffic area safe and secure.

LiftMaster is the number one brand of professionally installed residential garage door openers and commercial door operators, as well as a major manufacturer of residential, industrial and commercial door operators, as well as a major manufacturer of residential, industrial and commercial gate operators, telephone entry systems and related access control products.  Driven by the access and security needs of the residential, commercial and industrial marketplace, the expansive lines of LiftMaster products are designed to fit any lifestyle or application, providing customers with the latest technology and innovations in safety, security and convenience.
