New Remote Offers Sleek And Modern Design

LiftMaster has introduced an Universal Remote Control that is compatible with most major brands of garage door openers. Replacing the former model number 375LM, it delivers the latest security and performance, and provides a convenient, cost effective way to consolidate the number of remotes in your vehicle.

The universal compatibility allows you to operate two different garage door manufacturers at the same, also giving the consumer a 1-year limited warranty. The security+2.0 safeguards your household- allowing a new code to be sent to the garage door opener so that the door only opens for you.

The new 2-button garage door opener is compatible with most major brands with photo eyes. Call our showroom today, 615-822-3667 for a list of compatible brands.

Add A Clean And Organized Garage To Your New Years Resolution List

Throughout the year we tend to collect items, wanted or unwanted those items get tossed to the side and go untouched. We use the large spaces in our home as a storage unit, often times that space is the garage.

As the New Year approaches, we tend to make a list of resolutions. Adding a more organized and de-cluttered garage to your list can help you find what you need, when you need it. So if your car is out on the street because there’s no room for it in the garage, it’s time to get organized. Here are some tips and tools to make it happen.

Chemicals are the No. 1 danger. A lot of people keep pesticides, paints and auto fluids, often in old food containers, which can leak and cause fumes, burns, respiratory problems and fire hazards. Always store such substances in their original containers and out of reach of children. Chemicals that are poisonous to pets are a huge problem. Road salt and ice-melt mixtures can get on the paws of cats and dogs and cause diarrhea and vomiting. Antifreeze, in particular, is highly dangerous and can be fatal. It has a sweet smell that attracts pets; as little as 1 tablespoon can kill a cat; half a cup can kill a dog. Be sure to wipe up any spills immediately.

Gas grills often are stored in the garage, complete with their propane tanks. Propane is highly combustible, and when the propane leaks, it’s a gas. You can’t see it, but it can hover over the garage floor. One spark of static electricity or the flick of a light switch could cause an explosion. Anything with propane should be stored at least 10 feet away from the house.

Ladders can be a hazard just leaning up against a wall. Storing your ladder this way can tip over very easily, damaging your car or injuring a loved one. Lean it against the wall horizontally at floor level, or, even better, store it on hooks. Also, gardening tools should be stored vertically on secure hooks attached to the walls so they’re easy to get to when you need them and they’re out of the way when you don’t.

The key to keeping your garage organized is having a place for each item and knowing where to find it. Click on the link below for more tips on garage cleaning and organization tips.

Happy New Year from all of us at Dixie Door!

Garage Door Opener Provides Convenience To Homeowners

There is nothing more frustrating for a homeowner, than for something such as a garage door to just stop operating. Especially, when it stops operating at an inconvenient time such as when it is raining, snowing, or just too cold to unload that trunk full of groceries. That little handheld remote is a convenient device to have but it seems it can arbitrarily, and without warning,  just decide when it shall work no longer.

However, when the garage door is working properly, it may come as a surprise to learn that the device itself does not actually lift or open the door. The lifting force is provided by the spring that is attached to the door, most often a torsion spring, which is designed and used to counterbalance the weight of the door via a significant amount of tension. When the garage door is activated, either through a wall switch or by remote control, its primary role is for regulating the speed and distance that the door travels/moves to fully open or close. Furthermore, a garage door opener can keep a door securely closed in lieu of a lock-and-key method.

Garage door openers operate using one of three basic types of mechanisms or drives:

  • Perhaps the most common as it is the least expensive mechanism
  • It is also the loudest of the three options (rattling noise of the chain)

  • The quietest option (fewer moving parts) but also the most expensive
  • A good choice when the garage is either below or next to living space
  • Comes with battery back-up

Through significant advancements in technology since they were first introduced, security features have improved in the following ways:

Wireless key pads

  • They can be activated using a personal identification number
  • Family members can open and close the door without a key or a remote

Electronic Eyes

  • System employs a light beam transmitter plus a receiver at the base of the door
  • Obstruction of the light beam by a person or object prevents door from closing
  • This system should also trigger an auto-reverse mechanism for such instances

Like most other devices that have moving parts and/or electronic components, a garage door opener has a finite life expectancy. Usually, an opener will last between 10-15 years with proper care and maintenance. Eventually with fundamental wear and tear the opener can break down, ceasing to work.

If your garage door opener is making unusual sounds, regardless of its age, this may be a sign that the device is struggling or straining and/or there may be an issue with the door itself (perhaps balance or spring tension). In such cases, it will be important to stop using it immediately and place a service call to Dixie Door.

Does Your garage Door Pass A Safety Test?

Garage doors have evolved over the years, especially now being equipped with many safety features to help keep your family, pets, and even your car safe. There are several checks that you can perform to ensure that your garage door can pass a safety test.

The reverse mechanism on your garage door system should be in working order. Meaning, when the door is in motion, and there is something such as a bike in the closing door’s path, it should reverse back up.

This simple “Paper Towel Test” can help assure you that your door is functioning safely and providing the protection it should.

  • Take a 59.5-square-foot roll of paper towel and place it on its side under the garage door.
  • Close your garage door regularly.
  • If the door, or sensor, fails to detect the paper towel role and reverse, we urge you to put the door into manual mode until you can have it repaired by a professional.

Conventional garage door bottom brackets are under extreme tension and
can cause serious injury if deliberately or accidentally loosened or
removed by someone. Dixie Door only sales Clopay residential steel garage doors, which feature a patented Safe-T-Bracket. Under normal circumstances, the bracket cannot be removed while the door is under tension, significantly reducing the risk of serious injury.

Also, you can inspect your springs to make sure they are in working order. Eventually, all springs will wear out and break, even high quality steel springs like the ones used by Clopay. If you have an older garage door, have a garage door installation professional inspect and replace the springs if necessary. If your garage door has two springs, replace both at the same time, even if one is not broken. This will prevent any damage caused if the second spring breaks, and also keep your door working efficiently.

Call us today 615-822-3667,we’ll provide an annual maintenance service on your entire garage door system and make sure that everything is safe for you and your family.

Don’t Ignore Your Garage Door Springs

Many homeowners rarely give the garage in their home a second thought about maintaining the space to avoid unwanted issues with the garage door. I even bet that rarely you give your springs in the garage a second glance.

However, the springs that are included in your garage door system is what makes raising and lowering the garage door possible. If something goes wrong, not only will your door not operate properly, it can increase the possibility of the garage door being a dangerous hazard to you or your family.

A lot of times, homeowners try to replace and repair the springs without the help of someone that is professionally trained to do so. The springs on the garage door are under a lot of pressure, and if installed incorrectly can be extremely harmful to you. This is why we always recommend that our customers allow us to do this type of repair.

Even though we do not recommend replacing the springs yourself, there are things that you can do to help keep them maintained. Keep an eye on your door to ensure that it not only opens and closes smoothly but quietly.  For example, if your springs are making noises while the garage door is in motion we would recommend applying a lubricant such a WD-40 to the spring, in most cases this should work. You can also pull the emergency release cord to see if you can open your garage door manually. If it is difficult doing so, your garage door may be out of balance. The issue will not fix itself and can worsen over time, making the springs work harder than they should.

Let a professional technician at Dixie Door check your garage door springs to make sure they are working properly. Call us at 615-822-3667 to schedule an appointment.

Maintenance Is Key For Extended Life On Garage

Garage doors are easily overlooked as a major appliance inside the home. Not many homeowners think to have their garage door serviced annually. However, doing so can extend the life of your garage door, and ensure safety. A neglected garage door can pose a significant safety risk to your family, especially children.

The noises that you hear should be your first sign that your garage door should be serviced. Lubricating the hinges, roller tracks, rollers, and latches with a penetrating solvent, can keep your garage moving with ease and prevent unwanted broken parts. Replacing the astragal, or weather stripping as some may call it keeps your garage free of debris and unwanted pests. A worn astragal strip also may allow rainwater to seep underneath the garage door, causing valuables to become damaged.

Call us today, 615-822-3667 to come to your residence and we will gladly service your door to help prevent costly repairs.

Architects and Builders Choose Clopay Garage Doors for High Profile Projects

Clopay has invested in producing two new videos that show homeowners, builders and architects the beauty, reliability and value that Clopay garage doors can bring to any important home project.

The first video spotlights the 2014 New American Home, the official showcase house of the International Builders’ Show (IBS).  The stunning 6,700 square-foot home rises out of the foothills of the exclusive Sky Terrace housing development in Henderson Nevada.  The new video features interviews with the home’s architect and builder, both of whom comment extensively on their choice of an Avante door from Clopay.  Architect Jeff Berkus stated, “This Avante door is truly a work of art.”

The second video focuses on Atlanta-based builder Epic Development and their dramatic transformation of a foreclosed 1970s-era contemporary house into a highly marketable modern prairie home.  Again, the Avante provided an ideal solution.  “When those Avante doors are backlit, they’re gorgeous,” said Jim LaVallee of Epic Development.
